Checking the pockets of my camera bag and finding exposed film cassettes is telling. Images from Laycock in Wiltshire, some 2 hours drive from my house. For whatever reason, I had deemed the development of the film not particularly important. I have a theory that I have multiple levels of intent with my photography outings. These image of Laycock fell under the heading of “Getting out of the house images”. Armed with a camera and some film I feel motivated to leave the house and visit somewhere nice, Photogenic meanderings. Often in the late morning with pleasant weather.
I felt the images were unexpectedly nice, some of my more competent images, most worth keeping. What the images did not show was any concepts or experimentation. Not wanting to inflate my own abilities, but I often think with better light, the right atmosphere, and more editing; some of these images would be about as good as anybody’s. To get all those elements in place is no easy task, but ultimately; the basic composition isn’t going to be drastically better without some kind of seismic shift in mindset. Refinement and subtle evolution must be abandoned if I am to grow as a Photographer.
